The largest Online community dedicated about “making a differece”

There are a number of online communities which are called social networking sites. A lot of people join those sites or online communities, but there a few which are for a cause. Care2.com was created for a noble purpose and it is now the largest online community.
Care 2 is the largest online community of people who are passionate about making a difference.
Their motto is “One person can make a difference.”
For Green living, and social change, Care2 puts the tools for change in your hands.
Over 7 million members and 250 non profit partners has made this community a big name among other online community sites.
Care2 provides powerful tools to make a difference in your life, community, country and world. It’s driven by passionate people who want to restore the world’s balance.
Care2’s site combines social action, environmental news and green tips with related discussion groups, as well as services such as e-cards, email, blogs, polls and petitions.
Members register for free, and then can participate in any of the groups, actions and services.
The story behind the creation of this site is quite interesting:
President and CEO of this community describes in his own words:
“The seeds for Care2 were planted many years ago. As a 13-year-old boy, I traveled with my father in a thatch-covered boat up the awe-inspiring Amazon. My father studied Latin American birds, while I marveled at the rich wildlife, lush vegetation and fascinating people we encountered deep in the jungle. Even as I was moved by my lush surroundings, my heart was heavy from the sickness, poverty and deforestation that stood in stark contrast to the rainforest’s beauty.
One simple truth stuck with me: The world is terribly out of balance. From that truth, an overwhelming desire to make a difference was born. I realized that the power to make a positive change in the world was within each of us.”
Site was created in September 1998, with a passion to make a difference. A surprising fact is that Care2 is not advertised, so it is easy to realize that community is build up by via links.
Paynter (President and CEO)says: Care2 has never advertised. Instead the company has relied on viral marketing to gain members. Because the majority of Care2 users are female, for example, and as many as 80 percent of greeting cards are sent by women, Care2 offers free e-cards for members to send.
