Review: “Project Gutenberg”– Free e-books source!

Posted by youlki22 on December 20, 2007

When I first started using computer and internet, I was not sure that world wide web is a rich source of information, unless I spent a lot of time searching and browsing at the net. I love to read on variety of topics and I was really amazed that at many sites, I could read or download free ebooks. I would be providing those all links because I love to share my browsing history or experience with my readers.
The very first site, where I could read and download many books was Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg, is the first producer of free electronic books (ebooks)

Site link: Project Gutenberg

More about Project Gutenberg: According to Wikipedia
” Project Gutenberg, abbreviated as PG, is a volunteer effort and is the oldest digital library. Founded in 1971 by Michael S. Hart, it is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer.

Michael Hart said in 2004, “The mission of Project Gutenberg is simple: ‘To encourage the creation and distribution of ebooks. His goal is, “to provide as many e-books in as many formats as possible for the entire world to read in as many languages as possible.”

The Project Gutenberg collection is intended to preserve items for the long term, so they cannot be lost by any one localized accident. In an effort to ensure this, the entire collection is backed-up regularly and mirrored on servers in many different locations.

There are over 20,000 free books in the Project Gutenberg.

According to The Wall St. Journal, 10/29/91 report:
” Today There Are 1 Million Free Electronic Books On The Internet. In large part, this is the result of efforts by Project Gutenberg, and their 50,000+ volunteers, who have been creating just such collections of electronic library materials starting two decades before their word “Internet” ever appeared on the front page or cover story of any major modern media outlet.”

Project Gutenberg has been joined by The World Public Library and Digital Pulp Publishing, Internet Archive, along with Jim Baen [R.I.P.], in the creation of The World eBook Fair, providing you million of e-books free.

World eBook Fair granted free access to a variety of 1/3 million for the month from July 4 - August 4, 2006.
In the following years, they plan free access to 3/4 million in 2008, and ONE million in 2009.

*** Visit the World eBook Fair, July 4th to August 4th 2008 to download for FREE your sellection of One Million eBooks.
